Children's Health Month in California and the Importance of Indoor Environmental Quality

By: WebWire

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, there are approximately 8,789,275 children under the age of 18 in California, 2,236,000 of those are under the age of 5. Keeping these children away from exposure risks to substances like lead, asbestos, mold, radon and other hazards is key for their current and future well-being.

Recognizing this fact, the month of October is celebrated as Children's Health Month. It is a time that both the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) promote the importance of protecting children from environmental hazards in the places where they live, play and learn. In support of Children's Health Month, EPA and CDC provide a number of resources to spread awareness on reducing exposure to substances such as mercury, indoor air quality contaminants, lead, mold, pesticides and more.

“Children in California deserve to have homes, schools and playgrounds that do not expose them to substances in the air they breathe, water they drink, or things they touch that could cause them harm,” said Michael Chapman, Laboratory Manager at LA Testing's Huntington Beach facility. “Children's Health Month is a reminder that most of these exposure risks can be prevented. At LA Testing, our California laboratories support the efforts of Children's Health Month all year long. We offer indoor and outdoor environmental testing services to help safeguard children and their families. Testing services for everything from mold, bacteria and viruses, to lead, asbestos, mercury, PCBs, radon and more are available. LA Testing also provides sampling supplies, easy-to-use test kits, air monitoring instruments and building inspection tools to identify these and many other potential hazards.”

LA Testing sponsored an educational video about Children's Health Month several years ago that can still be seen at: https://youtu.be/zK3mLG-JWaY
