Revenue growth
A company’s long-term revenue performance is one signal of its overall quality. Any business can report a good quarter or two, but the best consistently grow over the long term. Paylocity’s 21.6% annualized revenue growth over the last five years was decent. Its growth was slightly above that of the average software company and shows its offerings resonate with customers.

Long-term growth matters most, but within software, a half-decade historical view may miss recent innovations or disruptive industry trends. Paylocity’s recent performance shows its demand has slowed as its annualized revenue growth of 12% over the last two years was below its five-year trend. Decelerating revenue growth in the sector warrants caution, as it could signal changing consumer tastes aided by low switching costs.
This quarter, Paylocity reported year-on-year revenue growth of 10.7%, and its $451.7 million of revenue exceeded Wall Street’s consensus estimates by 1.9%. Management is guiding for a 9.3% year-on-year increase in revenue next quarter.
Looking further ahead, sell-side analysts expect revenue to grow 6.1% over the next 12 months, according to S&P, a deceleration versus the last two years. This projection is underwhelming and indicates its products and services will see some demand headwinds.
Customer acquisition efficiency
The customer acquisition cost, or CAC, payback period measures the months a company needs to recoup the money spent on acquiring a new customer. This metric helps assess how quickly a business can break even on its sales and marketing investments.
Paylocity is efficient at acquiring new customers, and its CAC payback period was 29.4 months this quarter. The company’s rapid recovery of its customer acquisition costs means it can attempt to spur growth by increasing its sales and marketing investments.
Key takeaways from Paylocity’s Q3 results
Paylocity delivered a solid quarter, with adjusted operating income beating Wall Street’s consensus estimates and full-year EBITDA guidance also topping analysts’ expectations. Those were clear positives, but investors were likely hoping for more. Shares edged lower 1.5% to $167.18 immediately after the results.
