UNIONDALE, NY / ACCESS Newswire / October 23, 2025 / Marquis Who's Who honors Mary Jo Iozzio, PhD, STL, for her expertise in Catholic moral theology, disability studies and higher education. Dr. Iozzio has forged a distinguished career marked by rigorous scholarship and a steadfast commitment to advancing disability justice within academic and faith-based communities.

About Mary Jo Iozzio
Dr. Iozzio serves as a professor of moral theology at the Clough School of Theology and Ministry at Boston College, where she develops and teaches courses and publishes extensively on disability theology, Catholic social teaching, racial justice and virtue ethics. Her work combines careful scriptural interpretation with moral analysis, revealing how habits and virtues shape both character and society. Through a robust network of colleagues in disability studies, she inspires collaboration and dialogue, presenting at conferences and consulting with fellow scholars to broaden the reach of inclusive theology.
Dr. Iozzio's latest work, "Radical Dependence: A Theological Anthropology of Disability," represents a capstone to her career. This fall, Baylor University Press will publish her long-anticipated magnum opus on disability, a volume set to debut at the American Academy of Religion and Society of Biblical Literature annual meeting in Boston. The book continues her mission to raise awareness and integrate the voices of marginalized populations into theological discourse, solidifying her standing as a leading figure in the field.
Earlier in her career, Dr. Iozzio spent two decades as a professor at Barry University in Miami, where she earned a reputation for outstanding teaching and scholarly depth. Her academic path reflects a lifelong devotion to history and theology, beginning with a degree in history, with a concentration in ancient Greece and Rome, from Pennsylvania State University. She went on to earn a master's degree in theology, with a focus on the history of religion, from Fordham University, a master's degree in biblical studies from Providence College and a Doctor of Philosophy in theological ethics from Fordham. She later added a licentiate in sacred theology from Boston College and a certificate in counseling and spiritual direction from the New York Archdiocese.
A Career Dedicated to Serving
Beyond her professional endeavors, Dr. Iozzio remains active in her church and civic life. A practicing Catholic, she serves as a lector and Eucharistic minister, volunteers with the Boston Food Bank, advocates for climate justice through local park cleanups and participates in social movements such as the Women's March. She also finds renewal in walking her dogs and traveling internationally.
Dr. Iozzio's achievements have earned widespread recognition. Her honors include serving as an inaugural member of Boston College's delegation to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP26), appointment as Distinguished Professor and Austin and Ann O'Malley Visiting Chair in Bioethics at Loyola Marymount University, the St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Medal from Mount St. Joseph University, numerous professional development awards from Barry University, and prestigious fellowships from Catholic Theological Ethics in the World Church, the Ambassador Jean Wilkowski International Fellowship and the Fulbright Senior Scholar Research Program.
Looking ahead, Dr. Iozzio plans to continue teaching, mentoring and writing while preparing for a future sabbatical devoted to a second volume on fundamental moral theology viewed through the lens of theological virtues. Her legacy reflects a lifelong dedication to inclusion, affirming that every person holds an essential place in the human community. She hopes to be remembered by colleagues as both a respected scholar and a trusted friend.
