Why Do We Think Prosperity Bancshares Will Underperform?

We don’t have much confidence in Prosperity Bancshares. Here are three reasons we avoid PB, plus one stock we’d rather own.

1. Net Interest Income Points to Soft Demand

While banks generate revenue from multiple sources, investors view net interest income as a cornerstone — its predictable, recurring characteristics stand in sharp contrast to the volatility of one-time fees.

Prosperity Bancshares’s net interest income has grown at a 3.4% annualized rate over the last five years, much worse than the broader banking industry and in line with its total revenue. Its growth was driven by an increase in its outstanding loans as its net interest margin, which represents how much a bank earns in relation to its outstanding loan book, was flat throughout that period.

2. EPS Barely Growing

We track the long-term change in earnings per share (EPS) because it highlights whether a company’s growth is profitable.

Prosperity Bancshares’s EPS grew at a weak 1% compounded annual growth rate over the last five years, lower than its 3.6% annualized revenue growth. This tells us the company became less profitable on a per-share basis as it expanded.

3. Projected TBVPS Growth Shows Limited Upside

The key to tangible book value per share (TBVPS) growth is a bank’s ability to earn consistent returns on its assets that exceed its funding costs and credit losses.

Over the next 12 months, Consensus estimates call for Prosperity Bancshares’s TBVPS to remain flat at roughly $43.66, a disappointing projection.

Final Judgment

We cheer for all companies supporting the economy, but in the case of Prosperity Bancshares, we’ll be cheering from the sidelines. With its shares lagging the market recently, the stock trades at 0.9× forward P/B (or $70.03 per share). While this valuation is reasonable, we don’t see a big opportunity at the moment.
