What happened?

A number of stocks fell in the afternoon session after crude oil benchmarks retreated following U.S. midterm election results and shifting foreign policy developments concerning Iran.

CNBC reported that both Brent and West Texas Intermediate crude benchmarks dropped alongside European natural gas prices as investors weighed the broader market implications of a Democratic sweep of Congress. Traders closely analyzed potential policy shifts alongside changing expectations regarding diplomatic pathways versus renewed military strikes involving Iran. Geopolitical tensions in key crude-producing regions often inject an uncertainty premium into commodity prices, and signals pointing toward diplomacy can quickly alleviate supply tightness concerns.

Because integrated oil producers and exploration companies rely directly on robust benchmark pricing to sustain upstream cash flows and revenue growth, the retreat in commodity futures put downward pressure across energy equities.

The stock market overreacts to news, and big price drops can present good opportunities to buy high-quality stocks.

Among others, the following stocks were impacted:

Zooming in on HighPeak Energy (HPK)

HighPeak Energy’s shares are extremely volatile and have had 74 moves greater than 5% over the last year. In that context, today’s move indicates the market considers this news meaningful but not something that would fundamentally change its perception of the business.

The previous big move we wrote about was 2 days ago when the stock dropped 12.4% on the news that crude oil prices tumbled as renewed diplomatic talks between the United States and Iran eased concerns over potential Middle East supply disruptions. Brent crude fell by more than 4%, while broader crude benchmarks dropped 3% following reports that negotiators convened in Doha to develop a framework for an agreement. For energy producers, crude prices directly dictate top-line revenue and operating margins. When geopolitical tensions flare across vital oil-producing regions, markets build in a risk premium, which is an additional cost priced into commodities to compensate for potential disruption risks.

Progress in diplomatic dialogue deflates this geopolitical risk premium, pushing oil prices lower. As the threat of imminent disruption to global supply routes recedes, investors quickly recalibrate expected cash flows for exploration and production firms, leading to widespread declines across the energy industry.

HighPeak Energy is up 72.9% since the beginning of the year, but at $7.73 per share, it is still trading 33.2% below its 52-week high of $11.57 from October 2026. Despite the year-to-date gain, investors who bought $1,000 worth of HighPeak Energy’s shares 5 years ago would now be looking at only $538.30.

ONE MORE THING: The $21 AI Application Stock Wall Street Forgot. While Wall Street obsesses over who’s building AI, one company is already using it to print money. And nobody’s paying attention.

AI chip stocks trade at ridiculous valuations. This company processes a trillion consumer signals monthly using AI and trades at a third of the price. The gap won’t last. The institutions will figure it out. You need to see this first. Read the FREE Report Before They Notice.
