What Happened?
Shares of investment research firm Morningstar (NASDAQ: MORN) jumped 4.4% in the afternoon session after the company launched Morningstar Direct AI, an agentic software platform built to help investment professionals perform analysis and answer high-value questions. According to a company press release, Morningstar Direct AI is live for users worldwide and adds a browser-based interface plus three purpose-built agents.
A product-development agent helps asset managers judge category demand and launch timing. A distribution agent helps sales teams show where a fund could fit in a model portfolio.
A manager-research agent helps due-diligence teams review trading behavior and performance across market environments. The agents draw on Morningstar’s data, research, and ratings, and the company is also making that intelligence available through Claude, Microsoft Copilot, and ChatGPT. Scott Brown, president of the Direct platform, said the tools put Morningstar’s independent research into workflows clients already use.
After the initial pop, the shares cooled down to $201.46, up 2.9% from the previous close.

What Is The Market Telling Us
Morningstar’s shares are quite volatile and have had 19 moves greater than 5% over the last year. In that context, today’s move indicates the market considers this news meaningful but not something that would fundamentally change its perception of the business.
The previous big move we wrote about was 1 day ago when the stock gained 2.5% on the news that the company announced that its Morningstar Wealth division will make the Morningstar Public/Private Select Series available through Envestnet. According to a company press release, advisors on Envestnet will be able to use the series through its Fund Strategist Portfolios program. Morningstar Wealth built the portfolios with Apollo, Franklin Templeton, and J.P. Morgan Asset Management, and it will keep responsibility for allocation, manager selection, and oversight. Envestnet will handle trading, rebalancing, and tax management. The series, six strategies across the risk spectrum, is expected to be available beginning this October.
Morningstar is down 4.3% since the beginning of the year, and at $201.46 per share, it is trading 11.7% below its 52-week high of $228.23 from October 2025. Investors who bought $1,000 worth of Morningstar’s shares 5 years ago would now be looking at only $739.27.
