NEW TAIPEI, TAIWAN (MERXWIRE) – The Danjiang Bridge spans the estuary of the Tamsui River and stands as one of Taiwan’s most representative major public infrastructure projects in recent years. Beyond its function as a transport facility, it is conceived as a highly recognizable architectural landmark with a global outlook, establishing a new urban symbol for Taiwan. Designed by Zaha Hadid Architects, the project drew significant international attention throughout its planning and construction phases and was selected by CNN as one of the “11 Most Important Infrastructure Projects of 2025,” making it a rare Taiwanese infrastructure work to achieve global recognition.

In engineering terms, the Danjiang Bridge adopts a single-tower asymmetric cable-stayed design, using a long-span structure to reduce the number of bridge towers and minimize visual impact on the Tamsui River estuary landscape. The streamlined, vertically extended tower creates a new skyline focal point, achieving a balance between structural efficiency and landscape integration. This approach reflects Taiwan’s growing capability in integrating large-scale public engineering with architectural aesthetics, allowing the bridge to harmonize with its natural and urban surroundings.

With its opening, the Danjiang Bridge was transformed into a citywide cultural event through a series of large-scale programs. To bring the public closer to the landmark before its official opening, the Highway Bureau invited international festival curator Li Li-heng to serve as artistic director, launching the “Danjiang Bridge Together Arts Festival” under the concept of “Walking on the Bridge, Living with the Bridge.” The program featured hiking events, parades, concerts, and immersive experiences designed to encourage broad public participation. Pre-opening running and cycling events were fully booked shortly after registration opened, reflecting strong public anticipation.

The opening program emphasized participation and immersion, connecting multiple forms of engagement across walking experiences on the bridge deck, city parades, performances, and interactive public spaces. Visitors were invited to enter the bridge environment with family and friends, experiencing it through walking, pausing, and participation, thereby forming a direct emotional connection with the structure. Collaboration with local communities and creative groups further positioned the bridge as a platform for cultural exchange and co-creation. Specially designed rest and viewing areas on the bridge deck allowed visitors to relax, enjoy the sea view, and experience live performances, creating a new form of elevated public space. In this way, the bridge was transformed from infrastructure into lived cultural experience, becoming a civic space that integrates memory, leisure, and contemporary urban life.

The opening culminated in the inauguration ceremony titled “Thanksgiving · Beautiful Night Opening,” where engineering teams gathered to witness the completion of the project. The ceremony also featured Cloud Gate Dance Theatre presenting its new work, “Light Chain,” inspired by the structural logic and mechanics of the bridge. The performance translated architectural form into bodily movement, integrating architecture, engineering, and performing arts into a unified expression, marking a symbolic conclusion to the opening program.

As a key gateway to Taiwan, the Tamsui River estuary has long been a site of international exchange. The completion of the Danjiang Bridge not only enhances transportation efficiency and regional connectivity, but also elevates the cultural value of public infrastructure through integrated programming. From world-class architectural design to large-scale public participation, the Danjiang Bridge is not merely a crossing over a river—it represents a milestone in Taiwan’s ongoing urban transformation and its vision for the future of civic space.
