Beacon Design Collective Founder Dani Vachon Sets Out Why Environmental Organizations Are Often the Hardest to Reach With the Communications That Matter Most

Drawing on Beacon's work with environmental and conservation organizations, Dani Vachon sets out why the urgency of environmental issues does not automatically translate into audience engagement, and what changes when the communication is designed around the audience rather than the cause.

-- Dani Vachon, founder and CEO of The Beacon Design Collective Inc., an award-winning, carbon-negative creative studio based in Vancouver, British Columbia, has set out her perspective on one of the more counterintuitive challenges in environmental communication: that the importance and urgency of the cause does not, on its own, produce the audience engagement the cause requires.

Beacon is a carbon-negative studio with Green Business Benchmark Platinum Certification 2025, and has worked with environmental and conservation organizations on communication design and brand strategy. Vachon's perspective is grounded in that direct experience rather than in sector-wide research.

Why Urgency Is Not Enough

Vachon's position is that environmental organizations frequently approach communication with the assumption that the severity of the issues they address will do the work of engaging the audience. The logic is intuitive: if the problem is urgent enough, people will pay attention.

In practice, she argues, the relationship between urgency and engagement is more complicated. Audiences who are repeatedly exposed to communications that emphasize the scale and severity of environmental problems without offering a clear, specific, and believable path to action can become disengaged, not because they do not care, but because the communication has not given them anything actionable to do with the care they feel.

"The most important question before any environmental communication is not what do we need people to know," Vachon says. "It is what do we need people to feel, and what do we need them to do. Those are different questions, and they require different answers."

What Audience-Centered Environmental Communication Looks Like

Beacon's approach to environmental communication begins with the audience rather than the cause. Before any strategy or creative decisions are made, the studio seeks to understand who the specific audience is, what they currently believe, what barriers exist between that belief and action, and what would need to change for them to engage in the way the organization needs.

That understanding shapes every element of the communication, from the language and tone to the images, the channel, and the call to action. The goal is not to communicate at the audience about the importance of the cause but to design a communication that meets the audience where they are and offers a clear and credible path to action from that specific starting point.

Vachon describes this as the difference between a communication that is accurate and a communication that works. Both can be true of the same cause. Only one produces the donor, the volunteer, or the petition signature the organization needs.
