Mission Connection’s guide defines insomnia as a sleep disorder characterized by difficulties falling asleep, staying asleep, or waking up too early and being unable to go back to sleep, leading to distress, fatigue, and impairments in daily functioning. The two main types of insomnia are acute insomnia and chronic insomnia. cute insomnia is typically caused by stressful life events, transitions, or temporary disruptions to routine, but it is transient in nature and often resolves on its own. On the other hand, chronic insomnia can develop because of medical conditions, psychological factors, and other underlying health issues; as a result, the condition may persist for years if not addressed.
Per Mission Connection’s guide, insomnia may be caused by chronic pain conditions, like arthritis or fibromyalgia; breathing conditions like sleep apnea; and fluctuating hormone levels arising from menopause, thyroid issues, or neurological diseases. High levels of stress or anxiety, poor mental health, mood disorders, and trauma can also disturb sleep by keeping the mind overactive or causing nightmares and sleep terrors. Finally, lifestyle factors, such as an irregular sleep schedule, consumption of stimulants like alcohol or caffeine, and electronics use close to bedtime, can disrupt the body’s circadian rhythm, overstimulate the brain, and delay the release of melatonin, leading to difficulties falling asleep.
For treatment, Mission Connection’s resource says that cognitive behavioral therapy for insomnia is often recommended to individuals struggling with the disorder, as the modality is effective at teaching emotional regulation and identifying and correcting unhelpful thought patterns leading to sleep disturbances. In severe cases, medications may also be prescribed if patients are not already using over-the-counter remedies or find them ineffective.
Mission Connection adds that some individuals may also find it beneficial to practice relaxation techniques or improve their sleep hygiene, as lifestyle adjustments can lead to better outcomes when paired with treatment.
