Mission Prep is pleased to be doing more to support schools, as they believe schools are one of the most important sources for good mental health, resilience, social connectedness and empowerment among adolescents.

Their mental health action plan template was authored by Jemma Strain B.S. Psychology, the Clinical Content Writer for Mission Prep, in consultation with her highly credentialed and experienced colleagues from Mission Prep’s many centers in California and Virginia.

As Strain and her team explained, mental health action plans hold a myriad of benefits for schools, chief among them: changing attitudes to mental health at a whole-school level, which is essential for creating a more open, stigma-free environment; improving the mood of the student body at large, and giving them new tools to manage their emotions, especially negative ones; creating a less reactive atmosphere where students know how to respond to stressors more healthily; and improving students’ academic outcomes by reducing the impact of poor mental health.

Given these incredibly important benefits, Mission Prep believes it is imperative for schools to develop their own mental health action plan. They recommend doing so by firstly reviewing existing policies to assess whether they are working, and by closely studying the current state of mental well-being in their school.

Schools should then collaborate with key staff, including school heads, welfare team members and teachers, as well as with parents and community members and students themselves, to see what will make a meaningful difference.

In order to draft and develop their plan, Mission Prep recommends that a school follow the SMART (Specific, Measurable, Actionable, Reasonable, and Timely) framework. To help, they have provided a list of effective reflection questions to guide schools through this process.

Should a school want to make strides towards better mental health for their student body but feel out of their depth, Mission Prep is available for consultations.

As their spokesperson said, “Mission Prep is always here to help. Our team of licensed professionals treats a variety of teenage mental health conditions and can advise school staff, families, and teenagers who are concerned about mental health. Not only can we provide support in creating mental health action plans, but we also tailor treatment options to each student’s unique needs.”

They added, “What’s more, we can offer these approaches in various locations. Mission Prep’s team is available 24/7 to answer any questions or concerns, even if you decide that our services aren’t right for your needs.”
