Grant Joseph Talks About How Design Impacts A Product’s Success

By: Get News

Grant Joseph is a professional product designer, advisor and investor. Since 2009, Joseph has led product efforts for many Fortune 500 companies and promising startups. Products designed by Grant for startups, have raised $31.7M in funding from companies such as Techstars, Y-Combinator, Coinbase Ventures, Castle Island, Polygon Studios, Dapper Labs and other private equity firms with amounts verified on Crunchbase.

When asked about what makes a startup successful, Grant said “I believe it comes down to rapid iteration. Successful products are often built by people who don’t get married to one idea and are willing to adjust to customer needs until a product market fit is realized.”

Grant also asserts “Great products tell a connective visual story. Customers need to feel a deep connection to a product, and that's an arduous task to achieve with a bad design.”

When asked what defines bad design, Joseph states “Bad design often happens when the why behind the product isn’t thought through completely. A company can have a visually appealing product, but not necessarily a visually connecting product. This is a common reason why good and often valuable products fail.”

Grant Joseph has led product efforts for both Fortune 500 companies and startups. When asked about the differences in creating products for the two he said “The largest difference is enterprise level companies often know who their customer is and what they want. They’ve often found success and have a proven business model. Even when creating a new product offering, Fortune 500 companies know who it’s for and have greater amounts of user data over a new company with few customers. Knowing who the customer is, what they want, and why they need it, is the most important step a startup can take. It often requires focused customer research and rapid product iteration to yield positive results. Companies need to find out what their customers believe in and how they see the world. This step helps companies create a connective story around a product that compels customers to emotionally connect to the product. Apple and Nike do this wonderfully.”

In total, Grant has led product efforts for Social Media, Corporate Security, Personal Security, NFT, DeFi, Biomedical, Physical Health, Mental health, Convolutional Neural Networking, and Automotive focused platforms.

In 2023, Grant’s investment conglomerate and latest personal investment will launch Biomedical Mapping Systems (DBA BioMap). When asked, Grant said “It’s a powerful tool that transforms the way patients and practitioners view progress.” BioMap is a range of motion and postural measuring tool for physical therapists, chiropractors and other specialists.
