Revenue growth

A company’s long-term performance is an indicator of its overall quality. Any business can deliver a good quarter or two, but many enduring ones grow for years. Cloudflare’s 35.9% annualized revenue growth over the last five years was strong. Its growth surpassed the average software company and shows its offerings resonate with customers.

Cloudflare quarterly revenue

Long-term growth is the most important, but within software, a half-decade historical view may miss new innovations or demand cycles. Cloudflare’s annualized revenue growth of 31.8% over the last two years is below its five-year trend, but the results still suggest healthy demand. Cloudflare year-on-year revenue growth

This quarter, Cloudflare reported year-on-year revenue growth of 39.2%, and its $782.5 million of revenue exceeded Wall Street’s consensus estimates by 6.2%. Management is guiding for a 37.6% year-on-year increase in revenue next quarter.

Looking further ahead, sell-side analysts expect revenue to grow 26.9% over the next 12 months, according to S&P, a deceleration versus the last two years. Despite the slowdown, this projection is healthy and indicates the market expects continued success for its products and services.

Billings

Billings is a non-GAAP metric that is often called “cash revenue” because it shows how much money the company has collected from customers in a certain period. This is different from revenue, which must be recognized in pieces over the length of a contract.

Cloudflare’s billings totaled $846.2 million in Q3, and over the last four quarters, growth was strong, averaging 33.7% year on year. This alternative top-line metric grew more slowly than total revenue, meaning the company recognizes revenue faster than it collects cash, a headwind for its liquidity that could also signal a slowdown in future revenue growth. Customer acquisition efficiency

The customer acquisition cost, or CAC, payback period represents the months required to recover the cost of acquiring a new customer. Essentially, it’s the break-even point for sales and marketing investments. A shorter CAC payback period is ideal, as it implies better returns on investment and business scalability.

Cloudflare is very efficient at acquiring new customers, and its CAC payback period was 23.5 months this quarter. The company’s rapid recovery of its customer acquisition costs indicates it has a highly differentiated product offering and a strong brand reputation. These dynamics give Cloudflare more resources to pursue new product initiatives while maintaining the flexibility to increase its sales and marketing investments. Cloudflare CAC payback period

Key takeaways from Cloudflare’s Q3 results

A sizable billings beat and above-consensus EPS guidance for next quarter made this a strong quarter for Cloudflare. Billings came in well ahead of analysts’ consensus expectations, and shares soared 18.2% to $289.72 immediately after the release.

Cloudflare reported solid earnings, but one quarter doesn’t necessarily make the stock a buy. What happened in the latest quarter matters, but not as much as longer-term business quality and valuation when deciding whether to invest in this stock. Read the full research report here (it’s free).
