StockStory’s take

Avnet’s third quarter results were above Wall Street’s expectations, but the market reacted negatively, with shares trading down after the announcement. Management attributed the strong results to broad-based demand across all regions and end markets, particularly in data center, aerospace, defense, and networking. CEO Phil Gallagher emphasized that improved underlying market conditions, not just inventory replenishment, were the key drivers, saying, “The breadth of the demand across geographies, technologies, and end markets gives us confidence that what we're experiencing is much broader than any one factor like inventory replenishment.” Additionally, Avnet’s operating margin expansion was supported by effective cost management and increased operating leverage.

Looking ahead, Avnet’s management pointed to continued positive demand signals, citing a healthy and growing backlog, above-parity book-to-bill ratios, and extended lead times in key product categories. Gallagher highlighted new pricing increases for memory and other components expected in the coming year, while CFO Ken Jacobson noted that the company is positioned to support further sales growth with disciplined inventory and working capital management. Management remains optimistic about sustaining momentum due to diversified end markets, expanding supply chain services, and the company’s ability to manage through tightening supply conditions.

Key insights from management’s remarks

Management highlighted that demand growth was fueled by both legacy and emerging technology trends, while disciplined cost control and product mix contributed to margin expansion.

  • Data center and AI infrastructure demand: Avnet experienced significant growth in its data center, networking, and AI infrastructure segments, driven by customer investments in new technologies and hyperscale projects. These trends also benefited Avnet’s Integrated Solutions business, which contributed to operating leverage, especially in the Americas.
  • Broad-based geographic growth: All major regions—Americas, Asia, and EMEA—delivered higher sales, with Asia leading in total sales and the Americas more than doubling year-over-year. This broad geographic strength reflected strengthening demand across multiple end markets.
  • Product mix and margin dynamics: Memory pricing increases accounted for about one-third of sales growth, while the shift to higher-margin on-the-board components improved Farnell’s gross margin. The Avnet Integrated Solutions business, while lower margin, supported overall profitability by increasing scale.
  • Supply chain services expansion: Management described ongoing growth in supply chain solutions, particularly among large OEMs in the data center, networking, and transportation sectors. This business line is seen as critical for providing supply chain resiliency and driving higher returns on working capital.
  • Demand creation activity: Despite a shift toward fulfillment-driven sales in some segments, Avnet maintained consistent demand creation revenue as a percentage of total sales, indicating ongoing engagement with customers early in the product design process and supporting future pipeline strength.

Drivers of future performance

Avnet’s outlook is shaped by tightening supply conditions, planned pricing increases in key categories, and a continued focus on margin expansion through disciplined expense management.

  • Supply constraints and lead times: Management noted that extended lead times are emerging across a broader range of components, especially in memory and power products. While not yet limiting growth, the company is closely monitoring for potential supply-driven slowdowns, particularly if conditions persist or worsen.
  • Operating margin focus: The company expects continued operating margin expansion, targeting 5% for Electronic Components and above 10% for Farnell as cost discipline and favorable regional/product mix play out. Jacobson emphasized the importance of balancing investments with expense control to sustain profitability improvements.
  • Inventory and capital management: Avnet plans to continue raising capital to support working capital needs amid rapid growth, but expects inventory days to stabilize and positive cash flow to resume as growth moderates. Management highlighted returning capital to shareholders and opportunistic M&A as further levers for long-term performance.
