Even though Covista (currently trading at $125.60 per share) has gained 7.2% over the last six months, it has lagged the S&P 500’s 15.9% return during that period. This may have investors wondering how to approach the situation.

Is now the time to buy Covista, or should you be careful about including it in your portfolio? Dive into our full research report to see our analyst team’s opinion, it’s free.

Why Do We Think Covista Will Underperform?

We’re passing on Covista for now. Here are three reasons why CVSA doesn’t excite us, plus one stock we’d rather own.

1. Long-Term Revenue Growth Disappoints

Examining a company’s long-term performance can provide clues about its quality. Any business can have short-term success, but a top-tier one grows for years. Over the last five years, Covista grew its sales at a 16.6% compounded annual growth rate. Although this growth is acceptable on an absolute basis, it fell slightly short of our standards for the consumer discretionary sector, which enjoys a number of secular tailwinds.

2. Cash Flow Margin Set to Decline

If you’ve followed StockStory for a while, you know we emphasize free cash flow. Why, you ask? We believe that in the end, cash is king, and you can’t use accounting profits to pay the bills.

Over the next year, analysts predict Covista’s cash conversion will fall. Their consensus estimates imply its free cash flow margin of 20.1% for the last 12 months will decrease to 14.3%.

3. Previous Growth Initiatives Haven’t Impressed

Growth gives us insight into a company’s long-term potential, but how capital-efficient was that growth? A company’s ROIC explains this by showing how much operating profit it makes compared to the money it has raised (debt and equity).

Covista historically did a mediocre job investing in profitable growth initiatives. Its five-year average ROIC was 9.4%, somewhat low compared to the best consumer discretionary companies that consistently pump out 65%+.

Final Judgment

We see the value of companies helping consumers, but in the case of Covista, we’re out. With its shares lagging the market recently, the stock trades at 13.6× forward P/E (or $125.60 per share). While this valuation is reasonable, we don’t see a big opportunity at the moment. There are better stocks to buy right now. We’d recommend looking at the most dominant software business in the world.
