A real industrial lead abatement project shows how A-LUX laser systems remove hazardous lead-based coatings while sharply reducing the contaminated waste stream associated with abrasive blasting.

-- For owners of aging industrial assets, lead-based paint is a standing liability. It is hazardous to remove, expensive to dispose of, and tightly regulated. Argento Lux, the company behind A-LUX laser systems, today reported results from a laser lead abatement project in which its equipment removed coating from an industrial contact tower carrying nearly 100 years of accumulated paint. The A-LUX systems were used in place of traditional abrasive blasting, and the coating was removed under controlled containment and extraction procedures, with no reported paint migration outside the controlled work area.

For the asset owner, the value of laser cleaning is less about raw removal speed than about everything that disappears around the work. With abrasive blasting, every pound of media that strikes the coating becomes hazardous waste with hundreds or thousands of pounds of spent media to collect, transport, and dispose of, plus the containment cleanup and housekeeping that follow.

Laser cleaning removes the blast media from the equation entirely. The laser energy lifts the paint while the resulting fume and particulate is captured through dedicated extraction and filtration This reduces a waste stream measured in drums and pallets down to filters and collection bags with corresponding reductions in disposal cost, media handling, labor, and project duration.

On the project, several A-LUX laser systems were lifted and staged onto scaffolding so the tower could be cleaned in place. The work was performed by a laser operator, with an extraction technician supporting the process directly at the substrate. Because the process uses no water or abrasive media, the steel also showed reduced flash rusting, for a more stable window to recoat. The tower was subsequently coated.

To strengthen control at the surface, Argento Lux developed Beam Vault™, a proprietary containment and extraction system that captures ablated material at the point of interaction, where the laser removes the coating.

By bringing the extraction path directly to the substrate, Beam Vault™ can reduce labor requirements and, in suitable geometries, may allow certain two-person removal setups to be performed as operator-led applications.

It is best suited to broad surface areas and flatter steel sections; complex geometry may still require traditional external extraction. Beam Vault™ does not replace proper abatement procedures.

Tyrel Denver, Founder and Managing Director of Argento Lux, emphasized that laser cleaning is a removal method, not a substitute for compliance. “Lead abatement is a regulated hazardous-material process, not simply a surface-cleaning job,” said Denver. “The laser is the removal tool. The extraction system, monitoring plan, trained personnel, and abatement procedures are what make it viable.”

Any project involving lead-based paint or other regulated hazardous materials, such as asbestos-containing materials, should be handled by trained, insured, and licensed professionals, with site-specific safety planning, containment, Class 4 laser safety controls, filtration, air monitoring, and compliant disposal.

About the company: Argento Lux is the company behind A-LUX laser systems and the proprietary Beam Vault™ containment and extraction technology, delivering industrial laser cleaning solutions for surface preparation, coating removal, and hazardous-coating remediation. Argento Lux and its partners have deployed A-LUX systems in real lead abatement environments and work with facility owners, contractors, and licensed abatement teams to evaluate whether laser cleaning fits a given lead-based coating removal project.
