Sullivan and Sullivan LLP, a plaintiff-only personal injury law firm on Long Island and the five boroughs, is marking more than 25 years of practice with a simple but urgent message for every driver in New York: check your Supplemental Uninsured/Underinsured Motorist (SUM) coverage, because the minimum policy required by state law is not enough to protect you.
"About sixty percent of the time, the driver that caused that accident has the minimum policy required in the state of New York," said Robert Sullivan, co-founder of Sullivan and Sullivan LLP. "It's twenty-five grand. After the attorney's fees, which is a third, and there are some disbursements, you're looking at sixteen thousand dollars -- no matter how bad your injuries are."
The solution, Sullivan says, is affordable and widely overlooked. Increasing your SUM coverage to $100,000 costs roughly $60–$120/year for a typical driver with a normal record. $250,000 SUM coverage is roughly $100–$200/year, and a $1 million SUM policy, which can be the difference between full compensation and a dead-end settlement, typically adds just $150 to $300 annually. "Insurance companies don't tell people about this when they're getting their policy," he said. "Everyone who's reading this needs to look at their insurance declaration sheet and see if they have SUM coverage."
A Law Firm Built to Stay Small
Sullivan and Sullivan LLP is a two-attorney firm by design. Robert and his brother and partner Brian Sullivan have intentionally kept the firm that way for over 25 years, a deliberate contrast to the high-volume billboard firms that dominate personal injury advertising.
"The way this firm evolves over the years is by not expanding," said Robert Sullivan. "We will never hire another attorney. We could hire multiple right now, the firm does very well, but we would never hire another attorney because we want to try these cases ourselves."
The brothers are third-generation attorneys. Their grandfather, father, and both brothers all attended St. John's University School of Law, and their father is the founder of one of the largest plaintiff personal injury firms in New York. "It's been ingrained in us since we were born," Sullivan said. "We feel we're on the side of the people."
The firm handles exclusively serious injury cases, those involving life-altering injuries, wrongful death, workplace accidents, and significant injury auto accident cases that meet New York's legal threshold. Sullivan is direct about what the firm will not take: "We don't do the minor neck and back cases. Our firm requires the injuries to be serious."
Personal Service That Bigger Firms Cannot Match
Sullivan draws a sharp contrast between his firm's model and the large multi-attorney operations that saturate TV and radio advertising. "It would be the same thing as if you needed a heart transplant and you went in and met with one of the best heart surgeons in the world, and then the day you go in for surgery it was somebody who's been practicing medicine for two years doing your surgery. That's what happens in these larger law firms."
At Sullivan and Sullivan, clients deal directly with one of the two named partners from the first meeting through verdict or settlement -- and receive their cell phone numbers. "We make ourselves available twenty-four seven, seven days a week," he said.
The results speak to the approach. "I don't know if we've ever had a client who was unhappy with the result," Sullivan said. "The success for the firm? The firm’s success is measured by how our clients feel when their case is over."
The firm also offers a free "Accident Buddy" card, a laminated glove compartment guide that walks drivers through the steps to take immediately after an accident to protect their legal rights. It is especially useful for younger drivers who have been in accidents. Anyone can request one by contacting the firm directly.
