Semko Inc., a family-owned replacement window and door company serving the Chicago metropolitan area, is celebrating its 38th year in business and preparing to expand its showroom with a wider range of product samples and options. The expansion, expected within the next three to four months, is designed to give homeowners a hands-on shopping experience that lets them physically see, touch, and compare windows before making one of the most significant investments in their home.
Founded in 1989 by Hal Semko, the company has grown into a multi-generational family enterprise. Bob Semko, who helps run the business today alongside his father; Hal, three brothers; Jason, Adam & Dave, and mother, Diana says the family roots are inseparable from the company's identity. "It's been part of our lives for most of our lives," said Bobby. "We know this industry inside and out, and because we're local and family-run, our reputation is on the line every single time."
The company has tracked major shifts in window design and consumer preferences over nearly four decades. Today, one of the most in-demand options is black window frames, available in both interior and exterior finishes, a trend that has surged in popularity as homeowners seek to modernize their curb appeal. "Black windows look really sharp on a house," Bobby noted. "We used to carry black only on the outside, but now we can do full black interior and exterior, and it's been a huge draw." Alongside that, Semko has expanded its lineup to include fiberglass frames, wood options from Pella's Lifestyle and Reserve Series, and Marvin along with vinyl windows from Advanced Window and Climate Solutions giving customers a wide spectrum of materials and price points.
Energy efficiency remains a central selling point. Semko's windows feature argon gas which fills between two panes or three panes of glass, an inert gas that reduces heat transfer, and every installation includes foam insulation around the perimeter of the frames, removal of any rotted wood, interior and exterior trim work if needed, and aluminum capping on the outside to make everything looks nice and clean. The company's windows can qualify as NFRC-rated and engineered to exceed current Energy Star requirements, if requested. Customers regularly report meaningful reductions in their energy bills. "We hear from people a year later about how much they're saving," said Bobby. "With energy costs rising everywhere, that's a real and lasting difference."
Regarding federal tax credits for energy-efficient windows, Bobby noted that the government updated its qualification thresholds approximately three years ago, raising the bar for U-value ratings and making it more challenging, though not impossible, to qualify. Semko carries products that may still qualify, and the company walks customers through the latest requirements during consultations.
The upcoming showroom expansion will allow customers to browse an even broader selection of physical samples, including various frame colors, grid styles, built-in blinds, patio door options, and multiple glass configurations, all in one location. "I want people to come in and actually be able to touch and open the windows, not just look at pictures on a screen," Bobby explained. "We want to give people every option so they can make the best decision for their home at a one stop shop."
The company is also known for its no-pressure sales approach — a philosophy instilled by their dad from the beginning. Consultations involve a free in-home estimate with samples brought directly to the customer. "My dad always said, don't put pressure on people to make decisions," Bobby said. "Sometimes we lose a sale or two because of that, but it's better for people to decide on their own terms." All products and workmanship come backed by a lifetime warranty, including glass breakage, underscoring the company's long-term commitment to each customer.
Homeowners in Chicago and surrounding suburbs — including Park Ridge, Palatine, Oak Park, Wheaton, Lincolnwood, Addison and suburbs from all throughout Chicagoland’s nearly 10 million people— are encouraged to visit the showroom or call to schedule a free in-home estimate. Bobby's advice for anyone considering new windows is straightforward: "Get two or three estimates, check the reviews, and come see the windows in person. It's a big investment and you want to get it right."
