Minority Developer Calls for Greater Equity and Inclusion in Urban Planning

Former NFL player turned developer Chinedum K. Ndukwe is using his platform to bring attention to an often-overlooked issue in American cities: the lack of inclusive, community-led real estate development. In a newly released interview titled “Building With Purpose”, Ndukwe shares his journey from the football field to the boardroom and calls for deeper civic engagement and equity in the way communities are designed and developed.

“There weren’t many minority-owned firms doing real estate at scale,” Ndukwe recalls. “That was a gap I wanted to help fill.”

Now the founder and managing partner of Kingsley + Co., Ndukwe is leading a new model of development—one that listens first, adapts often, and always prioritises people. His latest project, a 481-bed student housing development near the University of Cincinnati, received unanimous approval from the City Planning Commission after his team increased parking, added bike infrastructure, and included clean energy solutions—all in direct response to resident feedback.

“We ask: how will this space serve the people who live here? Every project has to be viable, but it also has to be responsible,” Ndukwe says.

This approach is more than good business—it’s urgently needed. Over 60% of urban land development in the US occurs without meaningful community input. Meanwhile, minority-owned firms represent less than 2% of developers nationwide. That imbalance creates spaces that exclude rather than include—and limits long-term value creation.

Through his firm and the Ndukwe Foundation, he advocates for inclusive design and opportunities for underrepresented entrepreneurs. “You can’t build trust from behind a desk,” he says. “We want people to see themselves in the places we build.”

From his early-morning journalling routine to his emphasis on legacy over accolades, Ndukwe’s leadership style is rooted in clarity, humility, and consistency. His story serves as both blueprint and rallying cry.
