Initiatives expand hands-on learning and global appeal at leading Connecticut boarding school
Oxford Academy announces new signature programs for 2025/26 in STEAM, Industrial Arts, and Music. Students will explore hands-on projects in science, technology, engineering, arts, math, woodworking, design, and music performance. These programs reflect Oxford’s commitment to personalized, experiential learning and serve a diverse community, including 30% international students.

WESTBROOK, CT - Oxford Academy has announced the launch of three innovative signature programs designed to broaden academic and co-curricular opportunities for its students. These initiatives—spanning STEAM, Industrial Arts, and Music—underscore the school’s mission to provide a personalized, relational education that nurtures each student’s talents and passions.

“Each of these programs reflects our belief in helping students discover and cultivate their unique strengths,” said Philip B. Cocchiola, Head of School at Oxford Academy. “We’re committed to evolving our offerings in ways that prepare students for success in an ever-changing world.”

The new programs include:

  • STEAM Program (Launched Spring 2025): Integrating science, technology, engineering, the arts, and mathematics, Oxford’s STEAM initiative emphasizes hands-on, collaborative projects that promote creativity, critical thinking, and problem-solving skills. Already, students have completed projects ranging from robotics prototypes to digital art installations. Over half the student body has participated since the program’s soft launch, highlighting strong interest in interdisciplinary exploration.

  • Industrial Arts Program (Launching Summer 2025): This program will introduce students to woodworking, design, and fabrication within a purpose-built makerspace. Students will gain practical skills, learn to work with precision, and experience the satisfaction of crafting projects from start to finish. The makerspace, equipped with modern tools and safety features, is designed to accommodate up to 30 students per term. The program aims to build not just technical ability, but also perseverance and pride in craftsmanship.

  • Music Program (Launching 2025/26): The new music program will offer individual and group instruction across various instruments, vocal performance, and digital music production. Students will have opportunities to perform in ensembles, compose original works, and develop a lifelong appreciation for music. Plans include a series of student recitals and collaborative performances that will become highlights of the school year.

These additions reinforce Oxford Academy’s approach to experiential and relational learning, where students engage deeply with their studies while building meaningful relationships with faculty and peers. The school believes that learning extends beyond traditional classrooms into creative, practical, and artistic pursuits.

“These programs are designed not only to engage our local and regional students, but also to enrich the educational experience for our international community,” Cocchiola noted. “We’re building spaces where students can pursue their interests with passion—whether they’re coding apps, crafting furniture, or composing music.”

Founded in 1906, Oxford Academy is an independent boarding school that serves a diverse student body, including approximately 30% international students from countries around the world. The school’s low student-to-faculty ratio and personalized approach ensure that every student receives individual attention and support tailored to their needs.

Oxford Academy invites families, community members, and educational partners to learn more about these initiatives and explore how they prepare students for both college and life beyond the classroom.
