Announced at AutoSens Europe, OMNIVISION’s new OAX7700 ASIC enables feature customization and over-the-air updates for always-on parking surveillance camera systems, supporting the industry’s move to software-defined vehicles

OMNIVISION, a leading global developer of semiconductor solutions, including advanced digital imaging, analog and display technology, today announced the new OAX7700 ultralow-power ASIC, an always-on vision (AOV) AI companion processor designed to upgrade existing exterior camera solutions like surround-view systems (SVS) to ultralow-power edge AI–based parking surveillance systems.

The OAX7700 ASIC integrates a neural processing unit (NPU) to support edge AI functions such as human presence detection, person and object detection, and distance measurement. In always-on operation mode, the camera continuously monitors the vehicle’s surroundings, consuming minimal power until an event triggers it to instantly switch to normal mode. It records five to 10 seconds of pre-roll video, which the electronic control unit can further analyze to validate the trigger and activate an alarm if necessary. This helps the system eliminate false alarms caused by wind, birds, trees or debris. Pre-roll also provides car owners with forensic evidence should an event occur.

Parking surveillance systems equipped with the new ultralow-power OAX7700 ASIC consume 97% less power than existing solutions on the market today. It also greatly reduces the processing burden on the central compute platform while enabling faster and more efficient decision-making on the edge. The NPU allows customers to develop their own AI-based algorithms on the chipset, extending functionality beyond security while preserving the ASIC’s exceptionally low power consumption. Developers can also deploy sophisticated updates over the air.
