Basement Refurbs Revealed as the Latest Home Trend in Canada

Basement makeovers are one of the most popular refurbishments and one of the biggest expenses in Canadian homes, a building company has revealed.

Basement Now, located in Toronto, has revealed that with people spending so much time at home through the COVID pandemic, they have been finding ways to increase the amount of living space by transforming their basements.

“The time when basements were used for junk that people don’t want lying around the house, but can’t bring themselves to throw away, has long gone. People have suddenly become very creative with basement makeovers.

“It is such an under rated space in many people’s homes and the possibilities are endless. You could add an independent apartment with a bedroom, bathroom and kitchen space, create a cinema room, a gym, an office space, install a golf simulator, a children’s play area, a family room, or a bar and games room.

“Professionally finishing your basement is a great way to increase the value of your home. The costs vary tremendously, but it all depends what you want to create,” he added.

Some of the things that will have to be accounted for in the costings include, waterproofing, installing walling, plastering and painting. Built-in shelving, framing, plumbing and any other kit or furniture for the newly transformed space.

“It is likely to cost a lot of money to finish your basement, but it could give you a 70 to 70% return on your investment in the longer term.

“If your basement is already waterproofed, then the costs will be significantly lower. To give your basement a basic finish, you are looking at costs between $25 and $30 per square foot, but they can go as high as $90 per square foot for a more elaborate option.

“Labour costs are going to be between 30% to 40% of the cost of finishing your basement. If funds are tight, then use experts to sort the key elements like waterproofing, plumbing, insulation, building walls and plastering, and then you can keep the costs lower for the soft furnishings.

“Again, if you want to keep costs down and you have a large basement, then perhaps consider just redecorating part of the basement initially and the rest could be left as storage space. The great thing is, anything is possible with this space,” he added.
