April is Stress Awareness Month, and stress can be a major risk factor for addiction. Gratitude Lodge wants to raise awareness about the impact of stress on those who struggle with addiction and those in recovery.
Studies have shown that those who fall into substance abuse and addiction have higher rates of psychosocial stressors than those who don’t use substances. Understanding one’s stress and developing healthy coping mechanisms is key not only as a preventative measure for addiction but also in decreasing chances of relapse.
Stress Awareness Month was created 31 years ago to bring awareness to the often overlooked impacts of stress on the mind and body. It’s critical for individuals struggling with stress to know how to manage it, as it can drastically affect one’s health and, in the most extreme cases, lead to addiction as a means of coping.
Gratitude Lodge’s Executive Director Mark Williams states: “Having a month like Stress Awareness is great for bringing to light something that affects everyone’s day-to-day life. Stress is a part of the human experience but knowing how to properly manage it can be difficult. It’s a skill that needs to be developed, otherwise it can lead to something as deadly as addiction.”
If oneself or a loved one is struggling with addiction, it’s important to get proper help. Gratitude Lodge uses a variety of evidence-based treatments and an overall holistic approach to healing addiction.
Gratitude also has various resources to aid in recovery and will be releasing various videos on activities and strategies that Gratitude uses to help clients manage stress and other triggers.
Mediation, yoga, and breathwork are great for reducing stress as well as improving other mental health conditions. Stress management can also be important for dealing with withdrawal symptoms and cravings that people experience during early sobriety. Art therapy is another great way to reduce stress. It offers a chance to be creative and express one’s emotions through non-verbal means. Exercise is also a known stress reducer that improves the overall success rate of addiction treatment, and has numerous benefits for mental health.
Williams continued: “I hope that this month is a great reminder for people to take some time and reflect on how stress is harming their health, both physically and mentally. Re-evaluate what needs to be added in one’s routine or needs to change in order to alleviate stress. Keep an eye out for helpful resources this month.”
