BloodPact Delivers a Tech-Enabled Solution to Safer, More Connected Blood Donations

By: Get News
BloodPact enables individuals to establish their personal network of compatible donors, allowing for a more seamless blood donation.

BloodPact is an innovative application aiming to redefine lifesaving blood transfusions by connecting patients with potential donors and giving them the freedom of choice where the blood comes from. It sets up the necessary infrastructure for individuals to create their personal donation network, allowing them to explore their options and establish what compatible blood means to them.

Since the pandemic, there have been disputes between patients and medical teams over the type of blood they receive during surgeries. Many unvaccinated individuals have reservations about receiving blood from vaccinated donors and vice versa, citing concerns over adverse events. Despite the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) saying there's no safety risk and no evidence of the vaccine affecting blood transfusion, many patients are still worried and adamant about wanting "vaccine-free" or "untainted" blood.

Unfortunately, around 60% of eligible donors in the US are fully vaccinated against COVID-19, so blood banks only have a limited supply of blood from unvaccinated donors. Furthermore, blood packs are not labeled based on the donor's vaccination status. According to blood centers, all donors are screened for risk of transmissible diseases before donating blood. There's no need to separate units from vaccinated and unvaccinated donors. They also claim that it is an issue of practicality.

During emergencies where blood transfusion is critical, disagreements about the blood's purity and origin prevent lifesaving operations from being carried out, underscoring a need for change in the current system.

The BloodPact App's intuitive technology offers a solution that eases the burden on blood banks and hospitals while empowering patients to decide the type of blood they can receive. Through the app, patients can broadcast their need for blood, manage their blood donor preferences (i.e., vaccinated, unvaccinated, diet status, etc.), and connect with like-minded compatible donors. Directed donation assures patients their preferences are met and that hospital supply is sustained.

Patients must note, however, that while directed blood donation is possible in several hospitals across the country, some institutions may not offer this service. It's also up to the physician's discretion if a directed donation is possible. BloodPact helps by giving patients leverage when communicating with their physicians about blood transfusions. The app's creators believe that the freedom of personal selection shouldn't be a barrier to receiving quality care.

The BloodPact App is the first of its kind and a real game-changer for blood transfusion. It is available on Google Play and the App Store.
