Book Reveals Metabolism’s Implications on Health, Affects Approach to Healthcare

Metabolism and Medicine links metabolic function to disease

The two-volume series Metabolism and Medicine, written by Diabetes & Osteoporosis Center founder Dr. Brian Fertig, reveals new implications on how to approach our health based on findings about how our metabolism affects the body’s functions.

Fertig illustrates how metabolic dysfunction, which affects the energy our bodies produce, is largely driven by stress. This dysfunction contributes to chronic illnesses, such as diabetes, cancer, Alzheimer’s and heart disease.

The book takes a new approach, examining metabolism through the lense of physics. This resulted in data-driven insights into the body’s biological systems. These insights have the capacity to integrate with Big Data and AI algorithms, producing future care which will be personalized, predictive, and precision-based.

Fertig’s passion for medical education and belief in the importance of interdisciplinary education inspired him to write this series. He believes this interdisciplinary-approach will improve the quality of patient care and outcomes.

The findings in Metabolism and Medicine are applicable to a wide range of readers, not just those in the medical field. Through metaphors, illustrations and anecdotes, Fertig articulates complex theories in language that’s accessible to those without advanced education.

Fertig explains, “The topics covered in my book can change the way individuals perceive and approach their own health. You shouldn’t have to be a doctor to know how your body functions. I’m glad to give people a tool to help them understand and take charge of their health.”

Metabolism and Medicine has also received marked acclaim from experts in the field of medicine.

“A comprehensive and original opus linking metabolism with disease and preventative directions for the future. A must-read for experts and students alike,” said Michael Houghton PhD, 2020 Nobel Laureate Medicine and Physiology and Professor at the Department of Medical Microbiology & Immunology.
