Sistar SunRA focuses of themes of depression and anxiety in her book, “The Queen of Hearts” One of the main characters, Mandisa, escapes the clutches of her abusive father, along with her mother. But Mandisa struggles with severe mental health issues after suffering from domestic violence for years. The book focuses on her journey, and how she finds the love and support she deserves.
“I wanted to create a character that was relatable and wasn’t a Mary Sue. I wanted her to have as many realistic problems as possible. Mental health awareness is a topic close to my heart and I wanted to show readers that they’re not alone in their fight. I wanted the book and its characters to be a safe space for readers. In them, the readers can find solace,” commented Sistar SunRA, talking about the main characters of her book and how she wanted them to be relatable. “I wanted to stress to individuals suffering with the dark places of the mind we find ourselves enslaved, emotionally, that it’s not as bad as it could possibly get. In fact, this could be something truly transformative. For many of us, mental illness is a conflict that is mocked. However, so many forms exist and are stigmatized by society. Healing the mind takes a strong will, support from family and friends, and oftentimes an in-depth spiritual journey.”
The book’s storyline focuses on Mandisa on the run from her abusive father, who leaves no stone unturned to make sure her life is miserable. She meets Hakim, who she falls in love with. Hakim and Mandisa are unaware that they are connected by more than just love and that Fate has other plans for them.
Mandisa and her companions are embarking on a spiritual path that travels beyond reality, and their disabilities hold the key to opening the floodgates of waking up many amazing characters that we encounter with each new addition into the series.
