Inaugural Courage & Confidence Awards

Fort Lauderdale, FL, April 29st , 2021 –As Bowtie Kids celebrates community advocates, by presenting the Courage & Confidence Awards, a powerful and impactful event where the community comes together to celebrate awardees for their impact on the community and service to others. 

As they ease into transitioning back into live events, the Courage & Confidence Awards will be a hybrid event, offering attendees an in-person and virtual ticket option. Bowtie Kids will be providing a socially distanced and COVID-protocol designed event for those joining in person and all attendees will be able to enjoy a toast to awardees, live performances, raffles, silent auctions and a fashion show designed to inspire courage and confidence by challenging the social norms of beauty and fashion. 

Event Details: 

This special evening is being presented by Bowtie Kids and is co-hosted by Cpt. Renee Peterson, Broward Sheriff’s Office and Bowtie Kids Board member & Robert Boo, CEO of The Pride Center at Equality Park, both valued members of the community. 

Date: May 13th, 2021 

Time: Cocktail Hour 6PM; Program Begins at 7PM 

Location: The Venue Fort Lauderdale 2345 Wilton Drive, Wilton Manors, FL 33305 Tickets: Live event $125 (limited tickets available); Virtual event $40 

All proceeds will benefit Bowtie Kids in order to support the BTK mission, which is to support, nurture, and empower children and their families impacted by chronic 

pain, through education and support programming so that they can secure a better quality of life.

About Awardees and Award Categories: 

The evening will be dedicated to celebrating and highlighting those who are willing to be courageous and confident in taking on their own lives as they advocate for the lives of others. Each award category corresponds to one of the Five Bowtie Kids Empowerment Principles (EMPs)SELF-DISCOVERY, SELF-AWARENESS, SELF-WORTH, SELF-EXPRESSION, and SOCIAL ENGAGEMENT & ADVOCACY 

The Discovery Award (EMP Self-Discovery) - Greg Young, CEO, President and founder of The Backpack Barber Foundation has been impacting the community through his organization since 2018. His focus is to directly work with the homeless community and troubled youth while providing them with haircuts, backpacks filled with hygiene products and meaningful conversations. 

Young is awarded the Discovery Award for demonstrating his own self-discovery through lived experiences to be in service and dedicates his life to helping others become socially and emotionally empowered. 

The Vision Award (EMP Self-Awareness) - Nichole Anderson is a 24-year veteran of the Broward Sheriff’s Office Anderson is a serial trailblazer, becoming the 1st African American female District Chief in 2011, the 1st African American female promoted to rank of Major in 2017, the 1st female to be promoted to rank of colonel in January 2019, followed by her promotion in September 2019 to the position of Undersheriff, making her the first African American female to hold that position. 

Nichole is Awarded the Vision Award because she has used her visionary leadership to demonstrate the importance of identifying needs and finding solutions in helping others to become socially and emotionally empowered. 

The Be You Award (EMP Self-Worth) -Mayor Justin Flippen was a proud native of Broward County, Florida, whose love of public service, fostered by community involvement as a Boy Scout, fully emerged in high school, when he participated in the American Legion's Boys State government program. Justin was a graduate of Coconut Creek High School, Broward College, and Florida Atlantic University. At FAU, he served in many capacities in student government, including Student Body President, becoming Florida’s first openly-gay student body president. Mayor Justin was truly the people’s mayor, LGBTQ activist and trailblazing mayor of Wilton Manors, Florida. Mayor Flippen was awarded the “ Be You” award because he was true to who he was, and inspired others to become socially and emotionally empowered to live their fully expressed lives. [ IN MEMORIAM: MAY 6, 1978 –FEBRUARY 25, 2020]

The Creative Contribution Award (EMP Self-Expression) - Change The Ref artist and Co-Founder, Manuel Oliver turned the loss of his son Joaquin “Guac” Oliver into a movement. He uses art as a way to empower future leaders to make change on critical issues through education conversation and activism. Founded in the memory of Guac, one of the 17 students and educators murdered in the Parkland shooting in 2018, Change the Ref uses urban art and nonviolent creative confrontation to expose the disastrous effects of the mass shooting epidemic. Oliver, uses his creative expression for the benefit of others and by fostering wider participation in the use of art to demonstrate the need for creative expression in helping others become socially and emotionally empowered. 

The Community Advocate Award- The community nominates, votes and chooses the The Community Advocate Awardee. The winner will have a long history of community service and proven ability to lead, organize, empower and inspire others.
