Macmillan Learning, a privately held, family-owned digital learning company, announced today it has been named as one of the World’s Top Disability Inclusive Businesses based on its performance on the Disability Index®. The recognition is the company’s sixth consecutive and reflects its ongoing progress across workplace practices, accessibility efforts, and approach to building more inclusive experiences for employees, instructors, and students.

Disability is part of the human experience. More than 1.3 billion people globally, approximately 16% of the world’s population, live with a disability. In education, that reality matters deeply because access shapes who can participate, how students learn, and whether people feel they belong.

“Recognition as a World’s Top Disability Inclusive Business reflects meaningful progress, but it also reminds us that this work is ongoing,” said Kristin Peikert, EVP of People and Culture at Macmillan Learning. “Our different backgrounds, experiences and perspectives can only foster innovation when people can participate fully, contribute meaningfully, and feel they belong.”

Designing for Accessibility from the Start

For a digital learning company, accessibility has to be more than compliance. Students do not all learn the same way. Instructors do not all teach in the same environments. Employees do not all need the same support to do their best work. That means disability inclusion needs to be about designing better paths for more people from the start.

That commitment shows up in the products, platforms, and resources Macmillan Learning creates. The company has continued to strengthen accessibility across its learning materials and digital tools, including expanding its Accessibility Advisory Board to 16 members. The board brings together accessibility and disability services professionals from colleges and universities across the country to provide guidance, feedback, and perspective on accessibility priorities. Earlier this year, members of the board shared practical guidance for educators through resources including What to Know About WCAG: Practical Advice for Educators Who Feel Overwhelmed and AI as Assistive Technology: What Faculty Need to Know.

Macmillan Learning’s accessibility work has also received external recognition, including ASPIRE’s “Gold Standard” designation and Benetech’s Global Certified Accessible certification for its e-books, which the company has also earned for six consecutive years. The company continues to improve the accessibility of digital learning experiences, including new accessible highlighting features in Writing Tools and ongoing research to better understand the experiences of neurodivergent learners.

Inclusion That Improves the Experience for Everyone

Accessibility is often discussed in terms of standards, tools, and requirements. Those are essential. But the larger goal is more human: helping people participate more fully.

In the workplace, inclusive practices help employees contribute their perspectives and talents. In the classroom, accessible resources can reduce barriers. In product design, accessibility improvements often result in experiences that are clearer, more flexible, and easier for everyone to use.

The company’s disability-focused Employee Resource Community AVID (Awareness of Visible and Invisible Disabilities) continued working hand-in-hand with the company to affect positive change. In 2026, a new inclusive management learning series was launched to encourage company managers to increase their knowledge about disability inclusion in the workplace. Macmillan Learning’s accessibility team also established a new “Accessibility Advocate Award” to recognize employees who make meaningful contributions to the company’s accessibility work.

The Disability Index helps companies assess current performance, identify gaps, and prioritize actions that drive measurable progress. For Macmillan Learning, the top score is both a recognition of the work already underway and a reminder to keep improving.

“Accessibility at Macmillan Learning is part of how we design, build, support, and improve learning experiences. We are committed to using the insights from the Disability Index to keep learning, keep improving, and build a more accessible future together,” Peikert said.
