KING COUNTY SOLID WASTE MANAGEMENT
The Solid Waste Division (SWD) operates six transfer stations in the urban area, two rural transfer stations, two rural drop boxes, and the Cedar Hills Regional Landfill. Cities and private hauling companies, through franchises issued by the Washington Utilities and Transportation Commission (WUTC), are responsible for collection. Roughly 900,000 to 1,000,000 tons of waste is disposed of at the Cedar Hills Landfill annually.

King County's 2019 Comp Plan discusses the need to decide what the long-term disposal option will be after the Cedar Hills Landfill closes. It proposed what evaluation criteria to use and potential options to consider (e.g. mass burn, waste export, gasification, etc.). A final option for maximizing the life of the Cedar Hills Landfill has not been selected.
