Sammy’s Superheroes Foundation Supports Alex’s Lemonade Stand Foundation in Funding High-Impact Childhood Cancer Research

Wynnewood, PA – Sammy’s Superheroes Foundation, a childhood cancer foundation based out of Columbus, Nebraska has donated $200,000 to Alex’s Lemonade Stand Foundation (ALSF) to co-fund two cutting-edge research projects—$100,000 to Dr. Yael Mossé of the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia and $100,000 to Dr. Mariella Filbin of Dana-Farber Cancer Institute in Boston. Sammy’s Superheroes Foundation and ALSF share a vision of funding high-impact research to find cures for hard-to-treat childhood cancers.

Sammy’s Superheroes Foundation was founded by Erin and Chris Nahorny after their son Sammy was diagnosed with high-risk neuroblastoma in 2012. What started as fundraising by selling t-shirts soon blossomed into a fundraising movement in their community. At the end of that first year, Sammy’s Superheroes raised $40,000. The Nahorny’s were devastated to learn that only 4% of federal cancer research is allocated to children. In early 2013, they kicked into high gear and officially launched their non-profit organization, and they’ve been funding cutting-edge research projects ever since.

“We are better together and therefore excited to partner with Alex’s Lemonade Stand Foundation with a shared mission to cure pediatric cancer. We feel that this collaboration helps maximize the donated dollar. With the guidance of the Scientific Advisory Board at ALSF, we can direct funds toward research teams who know no boundaries when it comes to the impact on curing disease,” said Dr. Michelle Sell, a member of Sammy’s Superheroes Foundation’s Board of Directors.

Sammy’s Superheroes Foundation is funding Dr. Mossé’s Crazy 8 Award, titled Targeting MYCN. Dr. Mossé’s goal is to develop targeted drugs for MYCN, a currently “undruggable” driver of pediatric cancer, within the next four years. Dr. Mossé brought together a team of complementary researchers, each with unique experience to attack MYCN with innovative new technologies. Together, they will prove that the drugs they’re developing are effective against most lethal pediatric cancers and be ready to launch a clinical trial shortly after the grant is completed in Spring 2025.

Sammy’s Superheroes is also funding Dr. Mariella Filbin’s ‘A’ Award Grant, titled Exploiting the Differentiation Potential of Pediatric High-Grade Glioma to Discover Novel Therapeutic Opportunities. Dr. Filbin and her team are using a method called CRISPR-gene editing to ablate specific genes that they’ve identified as potential antagonists of the developmental programs in both brainstem and hemispheric high-grade gliomas. Dr. Filbin’s plan is to identify novel targets for high-grade glioma drug development and lay the foundation for new treatment strategies in this deadly disease.

About Sammy’s Superheroes Foundation

Sammy’s Superheroes Foundation was formed after Sam (“Sammy”) Nahorny was diagnosed with cancer at the age of four. To support him through his battle, the Nahorny’s and three of their close friends launched the Foundation to honor Sammy and other kids fighting childhood cancer. The mission of Sammy’s Superheroes Foundation is to raise awareness and fund life-saving research for all types of childhood cancer.

About Alex’s Lemonade Stand Foundation

Alex’s Lemonade Stand Foundation (ALSF) emerged from the front yard lemonade stand of cancer patient Alexandra “Alex” Scott (1996-2004). In 2000, 4-year-old Alex announced that she wanted to hold a lemonade stand to raise money to help find a cure for all children with cancer. Since Alex held that first stand, the Foundation bearing her name has evolved into a national fundraising movement, complete with thousands of supporters across the country carrying on her legacy of hope. To date, Alex’s Lemonade Stand Foundation, a registered 501(c)3 charity, has raised over $200 million toward fulfilling Alex’s dream of finding a cure, funding over 1,000 pediatric cancer research projects nationally.
