Local Organizations Join Forces to Tackle the Opioid Epidemic in North Minneapolis

Youth development initiative, Encouraging Leaders, collaborate with Multi-Cultural Community Alliance (MCAA) to create Project HEALINGS, a program to curb the spread of substance abuse in North Minneapolis

It is the collaboration of two forward-thinking organizations as Encouraging Leaders partner with Multi-Cultural Community Alliance (MCCA) to put an end to the Opioid epidemic that continues to ravage North Minneapolis. In a related development, Encouraging Leaders recently received a grant from the U.S. Department of Justice towards initiating the program, Project HEALINGS.

The undesired statistics around substance abuse continue to worry millions of people across the globe, having devastating effects on youth as well as persons across age groups. The case is not particularly different in Minneapolis and other parts of the United States, with experts already describing the situation as an epidemic due to its socio-economic effects. While several initiatives have been put in place to address the situation, more needs to be done in this regard, which is where the Encouraging Leaders-MCAA collaboration is looking to help.

Project HEALINGS applies a holistic, trauma-informed, asset-based approach to breaking the cycles of substance usage and incarceration, a unique way of addressing the issue of substance abuse. The project is ongoing and Encouraging Leaders has successfully initiated activities to support mentorship and cultural enrichment among people of color. Some of the project activities in place include the initiation of bicultural healthy living practices, the connection of the youth at crisis and affected youths with resources and peer education and support.

The project will undoubtedly provide a ray of hope to the opioid crisis victims and give them a second chance to regain their everyday lives. The grants will largely be used to avail resources on opioid addiction, case management of the affected victims, and bringing stakeholders together to tackle the issue of opioid crisis among the youth of color.

Encouraging Leaders and MCCA partners foresee this grant as a boulder that the opioid affected youth of color can anchor on towards a brighter future. This award will play a huge role in transforming the lives of the minority youths to a more goal-oriented and purposeful future through applying the cultural integration framework.
