Leaders Offer Vision of Integrated Security and Backup Solutions

Symantec Chairman and CEO John W. Thompson, in the Feb. 21 cover story for eWeek, identified two

Symantec Chairman and CEO John W. Thompson, in the Feb. 21 cover story for eWeek, identified two emerging opportunities for the integrated products of a combined Symantec and VERITAS.

Thompson, joined by VERITAS CEO Gary Bloom in the interview, said the combined company’s new security and storage dynamic will allow it to pursue innovations in threat and e-mail management.

One possibility Thompson mentioned included scanning, storing and retrieving e-mail in a manner customizable to a client’s e-mail policies. Another involved linking Symantec’s DeepSight early-warning system to VERITAS’ backup infrastructure.

“Our customers get it, our employees love it, our respective boards think it’s a smart idea,” Thompson told eWeek.

The magazine’s cover story said an integrated Symantec and VERITAS “will become a leader in more than a half-dozen product categories,” as “not only a dominant security vendor but also a front-runner in backup, recovery and utility computing.”

The article also mentioned Microsoft’s venture into the security market, and asked Thompson how much that development concerned him.

“Our view is bring it on,” Thompson replied.

“We’ve got a reasonably solid brand, we’ve got relationships with the channel, we’ve got products that have been rated by industry analysts around the world as the best in class,” Thompson said. “So we’re not going to tuck our tails and run from Microsoft. Show up with a product, and we’ll show you how we compete.”
