New Wyzant Survey Finds Out How Stressed They Feel

Chicago, May 5, 2020 (Issuewire.com) - Parents are feeling stress and uncertainty about their children's education as a result of school closures caused by COVID-19, a survey conducted this month by Wyzant, the nation's leading tutoring marketplace, found.

For the foreseeable future, COVID-19, and the school closures it forced, has altered the way that education is being provided to children in America. As classrooms move from the schoolhouse to online learning, parents across the nation are being tasked with homeschooling their children. In fact, over 60% of parents responding to the survey shared that, post school closures, they now spend 1-3 hours per day teaching their children at home. This is especially challenging for working parents who must now find ways to balance their careers with their children's educational needs.

To discover the effect this change is having on American families, Wyzant asked parents of school-aged children how well they are handling their new homeschooling responsibilities. Full survey results can be found here.

The results were surprising. Half of all parents who responded to the survey worried about the long term effects of being away from the classroom on their children's academic future. "Parents aren't teachers, and most don't want to be," says Andrew Geant, CEO of Wyzant. Survey results confirm this as 62% of respondents reported feeling "slightly to very stressed out" about having to manage their child's schoolwork.

To ease the stress, parents are seeking new ways to help their children learn. They worry that a virtual version of a traditional classroom isn't enough for their children's long term success. That's why 62% of parents say they plan to spend some money to help educate their children in the next six months. To ease the financial strain on families in need, Wyzant is working with their nonprofit partners to provide $100,000 in free tutoring services during the COVID-19 crisis.

"Online learning is here to stay," notes Geant. As online classrooms become the norm for students and teachers, families are discovering that students no longer receive the same level of personal attention they once did. Now, online tutors are able to fill that educational gap and offer the individual assistance and attention missing from a virtual classroom.
