PRLog - Aug. 17, 2014 - PLYMOUTH, Mich. -- Detroit Lions Tight End Joe Fauria will be hosting his first ever FootGolf Tournament on Tuesday, September 23, 2014  at 1pm at Fox Hills Golf and Banquet Center (8768 N Territorial Rd., Plymouth Twp) Footgolf has began to take Michigan by storm with Fox Hills leading the way being the first golf course in Michigan to have this new game.  The proceeds from this event will benefit the Michigan Urban Farming Initiative.

These rules are similar to the rules of golf.  FootGolf is a game that is played throughout the world in many different forms, but as a sport, it is regulated by the Federation for International FootGolf (FIFG).  This game is widely popular in youth both boys and girls and becoming popular across the United States and internationally.

“I personally love golf and soccer so when I heard about FootGolf I was excited to put together an event where fans can come out for a good cause and have fun.  Thanks to Fox Hills they are hosting this charity outing for us and have opened up their doors to make this a success,” says Fauria.  “The Michigan Urban Farming Initiative is a really great organization that is like a gem in the city of Detroit.  Tyson and the group of volunteers are doing such a great job, I want to help them be able to produce more healthy food, and get them some of the necessities that they need to keep the farm going.  This event will be able to help them financially and I’m glad I can be a part of this.”

“We are very excited to have Joe and his charity here are Fox Hills.  We have not held a charity FootGolf Tournament yet so this will be fun and new for us,” says Julia Grelak, Director of Marketing.  “Jason Hanson and his family came to play FootGolf over the 4th of July holiday and having Joe here will be great to really launch this new type of fundraiser here at Fox Hills.”

“Partnering with Joe Fauria of the Lions is really exciting for us,” states Tyson Gersh, co-founder of the MUFI.  “We are a true grass roots organization and being able to partner with a local athlete to bring awareness and help us raise funds for this project is amazing.  Everyone that works here is a volunteer and commits 40 hours a week to this initiative, we are very passionate about providing healthy foods in Detroit and this will help us be able to help more people and improve the farm.”

The Michigan Urban Farming Initiative focuses on education by viewing urban farming and gardening as an educational opportunity to provide long term solutions to the problem of food insecurity in urban areas.  Sustainability by growing foor locally to minimize environmental impacts on a local and global scale and by building relationship with the community to better achive their overall goals and objectives of creating a successful urban faming development in the City of Detroit.

Tickets for the Tournament can be purchased online at www.FoxHills.com.  Tickets are $80 each and will include food from Happy’s Pizza, and a cart.

The American FootGolf League (AFGL) is the exclusive member of the FIFG and governing body for the sport of FootGolf in the United States.  The AFGL is organizing tournaments throughout the country working with golf courses to bring FootGolf to their clubs as another avenue for revenue and to develop the game further..

About The Michigan Urban Farming Initiative

The Michigan Urban Farming Initiative is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization that seeks to engage members of the Michigan community in sustainable agriculture. We believe that challenges unique to the Michigan community (e.g., vacant land, poor diet, nutritional illiteracy, and food insecurity) present a unique opportunity for community-supported agriculture. Using agriculture as a platform to promote education, sustainability, and community—while simultaneously reducing socioeconomic disparity—we hope to empower urban communities.
