PR Log - Oct 17, 2011 - SANTA ROSA BEACH, FL – Appleseed Expeditions has embellished the essence of educational student travel yet again with a recent trip to the Freedom Center located in Cincinnati, Ohio. The educational tour through the Freedom Center enlightened students with the journey of slavery from the late 1700’s up to the time of the Civil War. Student travelers were afforded the opportunity to learn about what took place in slavery during this time period and engage in pastime activities that captured the reality of slavery during the 18th and 19th century. It is our hope as an organization that students after being exposed to this historical social injustice will want to get involved with helping eliminate social injustice issues that are occurring in our present day world.
As a premier leader in educational student travels, Appleseed Expeditions aspires to strengthen the pedantic intellect of student tour travelers through contemporary, hands-on experiences in Math, Science, Language, Service and History.
During the whole of this educational student tour, students gained knowledge on the policies that confined slaves living in the south, and how slaves north of the Ohio River were free up until the middle of the 19th century. For reenactment purposes, students were privileged with the opportunity to sit aboard a model slave ship that instilled the knowledge of what it was like to travel as an African American slave during this time in them. The Freedom center in Cincinnati, Ohio serves as the “National Underground Railroad” for visitors to discover parts of slave history that may otherwise be absent in interpretation. To further increase the student traveler’s knowledge of slavery, the leaders of Appleseed Expeditions taught tourists about the presence of slavery still evident in modern St. Louis, MS.
